Project Overview.
Tucked away in the hills of the Dandenong Ranges, this Belgrave home presented a unique opportunity: a quiet basement room ready to be transformed into a private wellness retreat. The client wanted to convert an unused space into a warm, calming sanctuary that could be enjoyed year-round.
We designed and built a full custom sauna, tailored to the room’s proportions while maintaining a spacious internal layout. The interior is lined entirely in Western Red Cedar, chosen for its rich warmth, natural aroma, and excellent thermal performance.
A two-tier bench layout provides both optimal heat zones and comfortable seating options. To maximise flexibility within the room, we added a portable lower bench, allowing the client to adjust the setup when extra floor space is needed.
Lighting plays a key role in the atmosphere: continuous LED illumination runs behind both sides of the backrest and beneath each bench, creating a soft, ambient glow without visible fittings.
Heating is handled by a Harvia The Wall unit, delivering a traditional sauna experience with a clean, modern aesthetic that complements the cedar interior.
The result is a refined, peaceful basement retreat that feels far removed from the rest of the home. The client was thrilled with how the space came together. A simple room transformed into a warm, restorative sanctuary.
